Jericho

Congregations still march the route of a siege from the Book of Joshua.

The practice reenacts Joshua 6, in which Israelite priests circle Jericho for seven days until the walls fall, and churches now walk the same circuit around homes, hospitals, and city blocks. Excavation at Tell es-Sultan, the site of ancient Jericho, has not produced evidence matching the biblical siege.

Not a rose, and the one usually sold is not from Jericho either.

Anastatica hierochuntica grows across the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa and was carried home by pilgrims as an emblem of resurrection. The plant sold under the name today is often a Mexican spikemoss from the Chihuahuan Desert, which performs the same trick more convincingly.
