Named for an orange shipped from a port now swallowed by Tel Aviv.
McVitie's launched them in 1927 and took the name from the Jaffa orange, the fragrant variety exported through the old port that is now a district of Tel Aviv. A 1991 British tax tribunal had to rule whether they were cakes or chocolate-covered biscuits; cake won, and they escaped value-added tax.
The port that named the orange is now a neighborhood of Tel Aviv.
The Shamouti arose in orchards near Jaffa in the middle of the nineteenth century and left through its harbor in such quantity that the port's name became the brand. Jaffa was absorbed into Tel Aviv in 1950, and the name now survives mainly as a trademark.
