hockamorenoun · 17th century
Well attestedEnglish chewed a German town down to one syllable and got hock.
Hochheimer, the wine of Hochheim on the Main, entered English in the seventeenth century as hockamore; Samuel Butler put it in Hudibras. The long form fell away and left hock, which British drinkers applied first to Rheingau wine and then to German white wine in general. Hochheim is a small town at the eastern edge of the Rheingau, on the Main rather than the Rhine.
