Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

A whole class of springs named after one hole in Provence.

The Fontaine de Vaucluse pours out at the foot of a cliff near Avignon, and a remote submersible finally reached the floor of its shaft at roughly 300 meters in the 1980s. Hydrogeologists borrowed the name for any spring fed this way, so the term now describes water rising in Florida and in China.
