The Florida Keys lime is a Southeast Asian fruit that Spanish ships carried west.

The tree reached the Caribbean with Spanish shipping and naturalized in the Keys, where growers farmed it commercially until a hurricane destroyed most of the groves in 1926. Nearly all limes sold under the name today are grown in Mexico and Central America.
