Dubna

This element carried two rival names for nearly thirty years before a committee settled the argument.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna, north of Moscow, claimed element 105 in 1968; Berkeley claimed it in 1970. The Soviets wanted nielsbohrium, the Americans hahnium, and both names appeared in textbooks for decades. IUPAC ended the Transfermium Wars in 1997 by awarding element 105 the name of the Russian town itself.
