dubbonoun · 1979
Well attestedAn entire regional city standing in for the phrase country bumpkin.
Dubbo is a city of about forty thousand people in central western New South Wales, roughly 250 miles northwest of Sydney. Coastal speakers used its name as a general label for someone unpolished, on the model of country bumpkin, and it appears in the 1979 novel Puberty Blues as the nickname of the local fool. The usage is now dated, and the city's own name comes from a Wiradjuri word.
