Devon

The period was named in the middle of a long and public argument between geologists.

Adam Sedgwick and Roderick Murchison named the system in 1839 after the rocks of Devon in southwest England. Their claim that those beds sat between the Silurian and the Carboniferous was fought over for years in what geologists still call the Great Devonian Controversy. The same word can simply mean a person from Devon.
