The bird was named almost four centuries after the last one died.

Bones from dunes and Polynesian middens on the Chatham Islands were long assumed to belong to living penguin species. Ancient DNA showed otherwise, and the bird was described as a new species in 2019. It seems to have disappeared within roughly 150 years of human settlement of the islands.
