Buckfast Abbey

The drink most associated with Scottish street drinking is made by Benedictine monks in Devon.

Buckfast Tonic Wine has been produced at Buckfast Abbey in Devon since the 1890s and is distributed commercially under license. The Scottish nickname clips Buckfast and adds the familiar ending -ie; it belongs above all to the west of Scotland, hundreds of miles from the abbey, where police forces and health boards have argued over the drink since the 1990s and where the towns east of Glasgow are called the Buckfast Triangle. Confusingly, Buckie is also a fishing town in Moray with no connection to the wine.
