Named for a desert the size of a small country, though it came from a single tungsten pit inside it.

L. P. Ermilova and V. M. Senderova described betpakdalite in 1961 from the oxidation zone of the Kara-Oba tungsten deposit in the Betpak-Dala semidesert of central Kazakhstan. The species was redefined in 2010 as the root name of a group, and the original mineral is now betpakdalite-CaCa.
