Abruzzi warenoun · 20th century
ProbableThe pottery is named for a mountain region that most tourists skip.
Abruzzi is the older English and Italian plural for Abruzzo, the mountainous region east of Rome that was administered with Molise as Abruzzi e Molise until 1963. Castelli in the province of Teramo was its pottery town and worked in tin-glazed maiolica. The English collectors' label is recorded in twentieth-century dictionaries rather than in the period itself.
