Aberdeen

Victorian slang for a fish dressed up with the name of a piece of meat.

Green's Dictionary of Slang records it from 1890 and derives it plainly from the Aberdeen fishing trade, which dominated Scottish haddock curing. The joke is the mock promotion of cheap cured fish to the status of a cutlet. The nearby village of Findon gave English another haddock word, finnan haddie.
